Could This Roanoke Home Be a Sears Catalog House?
625 Vinton Mill Court NE, Roanoke, Virginia - Sears Sheridan
The Story Behind 625 Vinton Mill Court NE
Every now and then, a home tells a story that goes far beyond square footage, bedrooms, and bathrooms.
That's exactly what happened when I recently visited 625 Vinton Mill Court NE in Roanoke.
At first glance, it's easy to appreciate the home's charm. The mature landscaping, established gardens, detached brick workshop, original woodwork, and inviting Craftsman character immediately set it apart from many of today's homes. But during a recent visit, I discovered something that may make this property even more special.
The owner shared a newspaper article from the Vinton Historical Society discussing Sears Catalog Homes in our area. Featured prominently in the article was a photograph of this very home. Even more interesting was the caption beneath the photo, which identified the property as a Sears "Sheridan" kit home.
When You Could Order a House from a Catalog
Between 1908 and 1942, Sears, Roebuck and Company sold more than 70,000 homes through mail-order catalogs.
Families could browse through house designs, select a model, and have the materials shipped by rail directly to their community. The homes arrived as pre-cut kits containing lumber, windows, doors, hardware, trim, and detailed construction plans.
In many ways, Sears revolutionized homebuilding by making quality housing more accessible to families across America.
Today, surviving Sears homes are cherished by homeowners, preservationists, and architecture enthusiasts who appreciate their craftsmanship and historical significance.
A Sears Sheridan in Roanoke?
The Sheridan - A Sears Home Favorite!
According to the Vinton Historical Society article, 625 Vinton Mill Court was identified as a Sears Sheridan model.
While additional research is underway to learn more about the home's history, several features still visible today are consistent with Craftsman-era Sears homes, including:
Original stained woodwork
Wide Craftsman-style trim
Built-in cabinetry
A beautiful brick fireplace
Historic character throughout the home
One of the most impressive features is the living room fireplace, flanked by original built-in cabinetry. It's the kind of craftsmanship that is difficult to replicate today and a reminder of the quality construction found in many early twentieth-century homes.
More Than a House
What makes historic homes special isn't just their architecture. It's their stories.
Imagine the excitement of a family in the 1920s selecting a home design from a catalog, waiting for train cars loaded with building materials to arrive, and watching their future home take shape piece by piece.
For over a century, this home has witnessed changing seasons, family gatherings, celebrations, and everyday life. The original craftsmanship remains, creating a connection to a time when homes were built to last.
Beautiful wood trim and bookcases flank the focal point fireplace.
A Rare Opportunity
